Born in Dundee, Scotland on June 26, 1930, Jimmy Deuchar was a bebop/jazz trumpeter and big band arranger who was most active in the 1950s and 1960s. After serving his time in the National Service at Padgate, Warrington, he joined British modern jazz outfit the Johnny Dankworth Seven. He also played in other high profile outfits including the Oscar Rabin Band and Ronnie Scott in the 1950s. He released the album Jimmy Deuchar, his first album as a leader, in 1953. Towards the end of the 1950s, he went to Germany and played with Kurt Edelhagen’s Orchestra. In 1957, he issued two albums: Pal Jimmy! and Pub Crawling with Jimmy Deuchar. He returned to the UK in 1960 and worked with Ronnie Scott until 1962 then spent the next four years playing and recording with Tubby Hayes’ band and the Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland Big Band. In 1966, he returned to Germany to work with Edelhagen again. In the early 1970s, he came back to London and became a freelance musician before moving back to Dundee in the middle of the decade. Deuchar continued working as an arranger and session musician for other artists including the BBC Big Band and the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra. Jimmy Deuchar died on September 9, 1993.
