Tadao Sawai, born on December 16, 1937, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, was a composer and koto player. He graduated from the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts in 1958. Sawai gained recognition for his skillful performances and compositions on the koto, an instrument he innovated with his own design called the Tadao koto. His career included collaborations with notable musicians such as Wadada Leo Smith. In 1971, Sawai released J.S. Bach Is Alive and Well and Doing His Thing on the Koto, a notable album featuring his unique interpretations of Bach's compositions. He continued to perform and record until his death on April 1, 1997.
