Born on July 6, 1965, in Hilversum, Netherlands, Yuri Honing is a jazz saxophonist and composer. He came to prominence in the early 1990s when he formed the Yuri Honing Trio. They released their debut album, A Matter of Conviction, in 1992 which was followed by albums such as Gagarin (1995) and Star Tracks (1996). The trio released several albums over the next decade, concluding with the 2004 album Alive. In 1998, he collaborated with Ukrainian pianist Misha Mengelbert on the album Playing, followed by 2000’s Lively, where the duo was joined by Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger. Yuri Honing’s 2001 release Seven, which featured musical assistance from Paul Bley (piano), Gary Peacock (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). The album was a huge success, earning him the 2002 Dutch Edison Award. An extremely prolific artist, he continued to release solo albums as well as recordings with his Trio, the rock-oriented Wired Paradise, and his Acoustic Quartet, earning many awards and accolades along the way. In 2020, the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet released the album Bluebeard.
