Edson Amândio Maria Lopes da Luz, known as Azagaia, was a Mozambican rapper born on May 6, 1984. He began his musical career at age 13 with the group Dinastia Bantu, releasing their album Siavuma in 2005. Azagaia's solo debut came with "Eu não paro" ("I Don't Stop" and "Alternativos" (Alternatives), from his first solo album Babalaze, released in November 2007. The album broke local sales records and included politically charged songs like "As mentiras da verdade" (The Lies of the Truth) and "A marcha" (The March). His second solo album, Cubaliwa, was released in 2013 by Kongoloti Records. Azagaia's music often addressed political issues and social justice, leading to controversies and censorship. In 2014, he announced a brain tumor diagnosis and underwent surgery in India. Azagaia passed away on March 9, 2023.
