Jack Nimitz, born January 11, 1930, in Washington D.C., was an American jazz baritone saxophonist. He started on clarinet as a teen before playing the alto saxophone. In the 1950s, Nimitz played with bands led by Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, and Herbie Mann. Throughout the 1960s, he performed in big bands with Terry Gibbs and Gerald Wilson, and was a founding member of Supersax in the early 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s, he played with bands led by Oliver Nelson and Bill Berry. Nimitz's first album as a leader, Confirmation, was released in 1995. He passed away on June 10, 2009, at the age of 79 due to complications from emphysema.
