David Mallett, born April 21, 1951 in Sebec, Maine, was an American singer-songwriter known for his contributions to folk music. In his early twenties, he wrote "Garden Song", which became one of his most notable compositions. Mallett's career began with independent record labels, including releases such as David Mallett (1978) and Pennsylvania Sunrise (1979). He relocated to Nashville in the 1980s and released two albums with Vanguard Records before moving back to Maine and establishing North Road Records. Throughout his career, Mallett's songs were recorded by over 150 artists, including Pete Seeger, Alison Krauss, John Denver, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris, Peter, Paul & Mary, and the Muppets. He performed extensively in venues across America and Europe, including the Newport Folk Festival. Mallett died on December 17, 2024, at the age of 73.
