Empire Bakuba, a soukous group from Democratic Republic of the Congo, was formed in 1972. The group, named after the Kuba Kingdom, included Pepe Kalle, Papy Tex Matolu Dode, and Dilu Dilumona, who were previously members of Lipua Lipua and African Choc. Empire Bakuba quickly became a prominent act in Kinshasa's music scene, known for their traditional Congolese influences and popularizing kwasa kwasa dance style. Their breakthrough came with the release of Dans Massasy Calculé A Abidjan (1986). The group faced challenges, including the death of Pepe Kalle in 1998 and a severe car accident involving Papy Tex. Despite these setbacks, Empire Bakuba continued with Papy Tex as the new leader, releasing additional albums.
