Joanna Fields, known professionally as Joanna Stingray, was born on July 3, 1960, in Los Angeles, California. She is an American singer, actress, and music producer who played a key role in popularizing Soviet and Russian rock music in the West during the 1980s. In 1983, Stingray released her debut U.S. 12-inch, 4-track EP Beverly Hills Brat under the name Joanna. Her career took a significant turn in 1986 when she produced and compiled Red Wave: 4 Underground Bands from the Soviet Union, the first release of Russian rock music in the United States. This album featured songs by Aquarium, Kino, Alisa, and Strannye Igry (Strange Games) and garnered attention from prominent Western artists such as David Bowie and Andy Warhol. Stingray spent much of the 1980s living in Russia, working as a musician, actress, and television presenter before returning to the United States in 1996.
