The Soul Vendors, a Jamaican rocksteady group, was formed in 1967 with several former members of The Skatalites. The band, including Ernest Ranglin on guitar and Johnny "Dizzy" Moore on trumpet, was part of the Studio One roster under producer Coxsone Dodd. Their early singles such as "Honey Pot / Rag Doll" marked their initial steps in the music industry. The Soul Vendors released their debut album On Tour in 1967, which included tracks recorded during a UK tour with Alton Ellis, Owen Gray, and Ken Boothe. Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, they produced numerous instrumentals that became classics, including "Darker Shade Of Black" and "Ram Jam". The group also accompanied notable singers such as The Heptones and Alton Ellis. Their prolific output continued with albums like Deliwe (1979) and Nilindeni (1980).
