Jeanne Demessieux was a French organist, pianist, and composer who was born in Montpellier, France, in 1921. She achieved professional recognition as the chief organist at Saint-Esprit in Paris and is famous for being the first female organist to sign a recording contract and for performing a repertoire of over 2,500 works from memory. Demessieux performed at Westminster Abbey for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (1953) and completed three concert tours of the United States between 1953 and 1958. Her discography includes the recording César Franck: The complete works for organ (1959), which received the Grand Prix du Disque in 1961, and the collection The Decca Legacy (2021). As a composer, she produced works including Six études (1944) and Te Deum (1958). Demessieux served as a professor of organ at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège between 1952 and 1968. She died in 1968.
