Made up of rappers Jamal (Jamal Phillips, born in Philadelphia on April 26, 1979) and Mr. Malik (Malik Edwards, South Carolina), the Illegal duo found success in the 1990s. Formed in 1993 by former members of the Hit Squad collective and based on the U.S. East Coast, the duo signed with Rowdy Records and recorded their only album The Untold Truth (1993), which reached #119 on the Billboard 200 and #19 on the R&B/hip-hop charts. It contains three chart hits, "Head or Gut" (#1 on the rap charts), "We Getz Busy" (#1 on the rap charts and #95 on the Billboard Hot 100) and "Back in the Day", which reached #21 on the rap charts. After a collaboration with Too Short in 1995, the group split up and Jamal embarked on a short solo career before joining Def Squad.
