James Elliot Dapogny, also known as James Dapogny, was born on September 3, 1940, in Berwyn, Illinois. He was an American jazz pianist, bandleader, and musicologist. Dapogny earned a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1971. In 1976, he formed The Chicago Jazz Band, which performed with artists such as Sippie Wallace and appeared on Prairie Home Companion. Throughout his career, he was involved in several jazz recording sessions, collaborating with notable musicians including Doc Cheatham and Maria Muldaur. His notable albums include Piano Music of Ferdinand "Jelly Roll Morton (1976) and Original Jelly Roll Blues (1993). Dapogny also authored works on Jelly Roll Morton and contributed liner notes to the Library of Congress recordings. He passed away on March 6, 2019.
