Add N to (X) was an electronic music group formed in London in 1994 by Andrew Aveling, Barry Smith (Barry 7), and Ann Shenton, with Steven Claydon joining in 1997. In 1999 the band signed to Mute Records and issued the album Avant Hard, which was followed by Vero Electronics (1999) and Loud Like Nature (2002). Their discography also includes Metal Fingers In My Body (1999). The group toured extensively across the United Kingdom and the United States, often augmenting their core lineup with additional synthesizers and acoustic drummers. After a period of creative activity, the band disbanded in 2003 following the departure of Ann Shenton and subsequent touring by Barry Smith and Steven Claydon. Post‑breakup, members pursued individual projects: Barry Smith runs Horseglue Records, Ann Shenton formed Large Number and White Label Music, Steven Claydon became a visual artist featured at Tate Modern, and Andrew Aveling joined Littl'ans. The group’s work remains noted for its fusion of electronic instrumentation and provocative visual aesthetics.
