Sofia Rotaru, born on August 7, 1947, in Marchyntsi, Ukraine, was a Ukrainian singer and songwriter. Her musical talents emerged early; she sang in her school choir and church ensemble during her childhood. In 1968, after completing her music studies at the Gavriil Muzicescu Institute of Arts in Chișinău, Rotaru won first prize in the Folk Songs category at the IX World Festival of Youth and Students in Sofia, Bulgaria. Rotaru's rise to fame began with her role as the lead actress in the film Chervona Ruta, released in 1971. The soundtrack featured compositions by Volodymyr Ivassiouk, blending folk music with pop arrangements and becoming immensely popular across Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Rotaru collaborated with notable composers, releasing successful albums including Tolko tebe (1979) and Tender Melody (1985). Rotaru's performances were widely broadcast on state radio and television, earning her multiple awards including People's Artist of Ukraine and Artist of the Ukrainian SSR.
