James Kenneth Donley, known professionally as Jimmy Donley, was born on August 17, 1929, in Gulfport, Mississippi. He began his musical career playing in local bars before serving briefly in the Army and then reviving his music career. His first singles included "Kickin' My Hound Around / Come Along" and "The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine / South Of The Border", both released in 1957. Donley wrote many songs, including "Born To Be A Loser", which became hits for other artists like Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis. Despite his musical success, Donley struggled with personal issues, leading to a decline in his career by the early 1960s. Donley committed suicide on March 20, 1963, at the age of 33.
