Helmut Debus, born on May 3, 1949 in Hartenrod, Germany, is a German singer-songwriter. Growing up in Brake, Debus learned Low German from playing with friends. He began his musical career as a drummer in the beat band the Madmen in the 1960s. His first album, Wo ik herkam, was released in 1976. Throughout his career, Debus has released notable albums including In dit platte Land (1980), Twuschen Ankamen un Afscheed (2000), and Sacht bi nacht (2009). He notably collaborated with the poet Oswald Andrae on early texts and toured extensively across Europe. His work has been recognized with several awards, including the Bad Bevensen Prize in 1989 and the Low German Literature Prize of the City of Kappeln in 2004. Debus' songs have been featured in films, theater productions, and educational materials.
