The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz ensemble formed in 1964 in New York City, consisting of saxophonist John Tchicai, trombonist Roswell Rudd, drummer Milford Graves, and bassist Lewis Worrell. The group's formation followed Tchicai's move to New York in November 1962, where he began playing with various musicians including Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon. Their debut concert occurred in the fall of 1964 as part of the "October Revolution in Jazz" organized by Dixon. In July 1965, they recorded Mohawk with Reggie Workman on bass, which was released on the Fontana label. The group disbanded in February 1966 when Tchicai returned to Denmark. The New York Art Quartet reunited briefly for a performance at the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in June 1999 and subsequently released 35th Reunion.
