Gianni Gebbia, born on March 1, 1961, in Palermo, Italy, is a saxophonist and composer. He started performing with Sicilian groups in the 1970s and moved to New York City in 1979, where he was influenced by loft jazz artists like Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake. His breakthrough came with the release of Arabesques in 1988. In 1990, Gebbia won first prize at the Top Jazz poll by the Italian magazine Musica Jazz. Notable subsequent albums include Cappuccini Klang (1992), Body Limits (1996), and The Williamsburg Sonatas (2005). He has collaborated with musicians such as Peter Kowald and Raul Ruiz, and founded the label objet-a. Gebbia's performances spanned various genres, including free jazz and improvisational music, and he has played at festivals like Banlieues Bleues in Paris and Total Music Meeting in Berlin.
