Johnny Windhurst, born John Henry Windhurst on November 5, 1926, was an American self-taught jazz trumpet player known for his solos. At age 15, he performed publicly at Nick's in New York City and made his professional debut in 1944 at Eddie Condon’s concert at the Town Hall in New York City. Windhurst played with Sidney Bechet at the Savoy Cafe in Boston in 1944 and later joined Art Hodes and James P. Johnson for the Jazz at Town Hall concert in September 1946. He led his own band, Riverboat Five, through Columbus, Ohio, and Boston. In 1951, he worked with Ruby Braff in the group Jazz At Storyville. Windhurst released Jazz At Columbus Ave. in 1956 under the Transition label. He died on October 2, 1981.
