Formed in 1992 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Heavenwood is one of the most respected names in Portuguese Metal, with a solid international reputation within the Gothic and Dark Metal scenes. Led by founding guitarist and composer Ricardo Dias dos Santos, the band has built a career defined by pioneering spirit, creativity and international recognition.
Their debut album “Diva” (1996, Massacre Records) was a milestone: critically acclaimed and the first release by a Portuguese Metal band to be officially issued in Japan via Avalon/Marquee. Extensive European touring followed, with Heavenwood sharing stages with bands such as Cradle of Filth, In Flames, Moonspell, Amorphis and Theatre of Tragedy. The follow-up “Swallow” (1998) featured guests Kai Hansen and Liv Kristine and was followed by a historic appearance at Wacken Open Air, making Heavenwood the first Portuguese band to perform at the world’s largest Heavy Metal festival.
After a hiatus, the band returned with “Redemption” (2008), mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren, featuring high-profile guests and marking a new creative phase. Subsequent releases included “Abyss Masterpiece” (2011), inspired by the work of Portuguese writer Marquise of Alorna, and the concept album “The Tarot of the Bohemians – Part I” (2016), based on the esoteric studies of Papus. International visibility was further reinforced with performances such as Dubai Rock Fest, another national first.
In recent years, Heavenwood celebrated their legacy with deluxe reissues of “Diva” (2024) and “Swallow” (2025), both highly sought-after collector’s editions. The single “The Universe” marked the beginning of a new cycle leading to “The Tarot of the Bohemians – Part II”, recorded between Portugal and France and mixed by Niko HK Krauss. In late 2025, the band signed a worldwide deal with Mighty Music Records/Target Group for the release of the new album.
With over three decades of history, Heavenwood remain a pioneering force in Portuguese Metal, known for international collaborations, artistic depth and a distinctive melancholic identity. Today, the band enters a new chapter, preserving its essence while moving boldly toward the future.
