Johannes Tinctoris was a Franco-Flemish composer, music theorist, singer, and cleric of the Renaissance. He likely received his early musical training in Nivelles and began his career in 1460 as a petit vicaire at Cambrai Cathedral, where he had contact with Guillaume Dufay. Tinctoris later served as succentor at Sainte-Croix Cathedral in Orléans and as a music teacher at Chartres Cathedral from 1463 to 1472. In the early 1470s, he became chaplain and singer at the court of King Ferrante I of Aragon in Naples. His major contributions include theoretical works such as Terminorum musicae diffinitorium, one of the earliest musical lexicons, and treatises on counterpoint, mensural notation, and solmization. His compositions, including masses, motets, and chansons, appear on modern recordings such as Secret Consolations (2017).
