Matthew Nelson, born 22 April 1967 in Loughton, Essex, England, is a British DJ and electronic music producer who began his career as an electrician and courier before acquiring his first turntables in 1988 and launching the pirate radio station Raw FM in London’s East End; he entered the professional DJ scene in 1989 with the Raindance rave event and soon formed the breakbeat hardcore group SL2, releasing the single "Do That Dance" that same year and achieving a UK chart success with "On a Ragga Tip" which reached number 2 in April 1992 and secured appearances on Top of the Pops; the group’s follow‑up "DJs Take Control" / "Way in My Brain" entered the UK top 20, and a remix of "Way in My Brain" further cemented their status; after SL2’s success, Nelson launched the SMD series (Slip Matt’s Dubs), with SMD#1 selling over 10,000 copies, and later established Universal Records to promote hardcore releases; he compiled and mixed albums such as United Dance Anthems 1 & 2 and Moondance True Rave Anthems, and produced remixes for Ministry of Sound; Nelson’s solo track "Space" peaked at number 41 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003, and he has performed at clubs including Ibiza’s Space, Eden, and Summum, as well as festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival, maintaining a presence on UK radio stations such as Kiss 100.
