Max Rostal, born on July 7, 1905 in Cieszyn, Austria, was a violinist and violist. He began studying the violin at age five and performed for Emperor Franz Josef I in 1913. Rostal studied with Carl Flesch and won the Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1925. His teaching career included positions at the Berlin Hochschule (1930–33), Guildhall School of Music (1944–58), Musikhochschule Köln (1957–82), and the Conservatory in Bern (1957–85). Notable pupils include Yfrah Neaman, Igor Ozim, and members of the Amadeus Quartet. Rostal was a champion of contemporary works, premiering Alan Bush's Violin Concerto in 1949 and commissioning Bernard Stevens' violin concerto in 1943. He co-founded the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition in 1945. Max Rostal died on August 6, 1991 in Bern, Switzerland.
