Beneath the Frozen Soil was formed in 2004 in Kalmar, Sweden by Linus Pilebrand, Buster Sporrong, and Olof Holgersson. The band released their debut EP The First Wreath in 2005, which received positive reviews. In December of that year Robert Björk joined as bassist to facilitate live performances. Their first split album, Beneath the Frozen Soil/Negative Reaction, was released in 2007 via Totalrust Music, featuring re-recorded tracks from The First Wreath and a new song. The album received critical acclaim for its aggressive yet cohesive sound. In 2010, Beneath the Frozen Soil collaborated with Evoken on another split album released by I Hate Records, which was widely praised internationally. Following this release, the band underwent significant lineup changes, leaving Pilebrand as the sole remaining member.
