John DeMain is an American conductor. He began his career as a pianist and conductor, studying at The Juilliard School and making his debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Early in his career, he received the Julius Rudel Award from the New York City Opera and was among the recipients of the Exxon/National Endowment for the Arts Conductors’ Fellowship for his work with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. DeMain served as music director and principal conductor of the Houston Grand Opera for eighteen years during the 1970s and 1980s, where he led major contemporary opera premieres. He conducted a Grammy Award-winning recording of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (1976) with the Houston Grand Opera. In addition to his Houston tenure, he has served as music director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the Madison Opera.
