Siegfried Landau was a German-born American conductor and composer who studied at the Stern and Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatories in Germany. After emigrating to London in 1939, he moved to New York City in 1940 and studied under Pierre Monteux. He became a faculty member at the New York College of Music in 1943. He conducted the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts in 1948. He served as the first music director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic from 1955 to 1971. He also led the Chattanooga Opera Association from 1960 to 1973, the Music for Westchester Symphony from 1961 to 1981, and worked as the Generalmusikdirektor of the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra from 1973 to 1975. His compositions include music for the dance drama The Dybbuk. He died on February 20, 2007, in a house fire.
