Oscar Toney Jr., born on 26 May 1939 in Selma, Alabama, began his musical journey singing gospel as a youth. In his teens, he joined The Sensational Melodies of Joy and later transitioned to secular music with The Searchers. His breakthrough came in 1967 when he signed with Bell Records and released "For Your Precious Love", produced by Chips Moman. This cover became his most successful chart hit. Subsequent releases included singles like "Turn On Your Love Light"(1967) and "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" (1968). In 1969, he released his last single with Bell Records, "Down in Texas" b/w "Aint That True Love". He toured the UK multiple times during the 1960s and was backed by Merlin Q, a band who later became Edison Lighthouse. He released "Down on My Knees" on Capricorn Records in 1970, and later found renewed interest in the UK's northern soul scene. In the late 1970s, he signed with Contempo Records for six singles and an album. Notable later releases include Guilty of Loving You (2001).
