Josef Protschka, born on February 5, 1944, in Prague, is a German opera, lieder, and oratorio singer specializing as a tenor. At age 12, he sang the vocal parts of Karlheinz Stockhausen's electronic composition Gesang der Jünglinge. Initially studying Classical Philology, Philosophy, and Germanistics, Protschka transitioned to a singing career, debuting at theaters in Gießen and Saarbrücken before moving to Cologne. His international breakthrough came with performances at prestigious venues such as the Salzburg Festival, Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, and Covent Garden in London. Protschka also served as a professor of singing at various institutions, including the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where he was rector from 2002 to 2009.
