Edith Peinemann was a German violinist and professor who was born in Mainz in 1937. She achieved early professional recognition in 1956 after winning first prize at the ARD International Music Competition and was famous for her interpretations of the classical and romantic violin repertoire and for being a "cult figure" among violinists with a limited discography. Peinemann made a debut in the United States with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1962) and performed with ensembles including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra, where she was coached by George Szell. She served as a professor of violin at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts between 1976 and 2002. Peinemann's discography includes recordings of Hans Pfitzner’s Violin Concerto (1959) and Antonín Dvořák’s Violin Concerto (1966), alongside the collection Brahms, Busoni & Mozart: Violin Sonatas (2014). Peinemann died in 2023.
