Mathias Breitschaft, born on May 6, 1950, in Würzburg, Germany, is a conductor and church musician. He began his career as a member of the Regensburg Cathedral Choir and studied school music at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts under Helmuth Rilling and Kurt Hessenberg. Breitschaft led the Limburger Cathedral Choir from 1973 to 1985, and in 1985, he was appointed as Cathedral Music Director at the Mainz Cathedral, succeeding Heinrich Hain. During his tenure, he founded the Saint Martin's Cathedral Choir in 1987 and the Mainz Cathedral Girls' Choir in 1995. Breitschaft taught as a professor of choral conducting at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1994 until his retirement in July 2012. Notable awards include the Peter Cornelius Plaque (2001), the Orlando di Lasso Medal (2010), and the Prize of the State Music Council for Services to Musical Culture in 2019.
