Angela Tunstall

Gerald Barry is an Irish composer born on April 28, 1952, in Clarecastle. He studied music at University College Dublin and later in Amsterdam with Peter Schat, in Cologne with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel, and in Vienna with Friedrich Cerha. Barry began composing music after hearing a Handel aria on the radio. He taught at the University of Cork from 1982 to 1986. His compositions featured precise and unpredictable musical elements. His discography included the operas The Intelligence Park (1990) and The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit (1991). His opera The Importance of Being Earnest, based on the play by Oscar Wilde, premiered in Los Angeles in 2010. His works also included the musical piece “The Conquest of Ireland” (1995) and the opera Alice's Adventures Underground (2014).
