Soultans was founded in Germany in 1995. The band consists of various singers whose line-up changes over the years. The best-known members include Femi Oladeji, Danny Campbell and Johan van Rooy. The project moves in the genres of R&B, soul and pop with influences from 1990s urban pop productions. From 1996, Soultans released their first singles in the European pop and soul market. The international breakthrough came with the song "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", a cover version of the Motown classic. The title reaches chart positions in several European countries and becomes the group's best-known track. Further singles such as "Every Little Move" and "I Know" follow and consolidate the group's presence in the European radio and dance-pop environment. The album Love, Sweat and Tears is released in 1997. The album combines soul interpretations with the contemporary pop sound of the 1990s.
