Born in 1970 in Liège (Belgium), Sacha Toorop is the youngest of six children and the son of Indonesian-Batavian rock'n'roll musician Ruud "Richy" Toorop, singer-guitarist with The Jockers, The Black Eye and The Twangies. A fan of bands such as Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, he abandoned his studies and quickly turned to music, starting out as a drummer before becoming a multi-instrumentalist. At 18, he played in a local band called Nothing Special, then the following year with Billy and the E.P.'s, before devoting himself in the early 1990s to the imaginary orchestra project Zop Hopop. His atypical universe, which he unfurls within this latter formation, extends over five albums, between Welcome in 1996 and Mangrovia in 2005. It also attracted the attention of French artists such as Yann Tiersen, Dominique A and Françoiz Breut, with whom he collaborated. In 2006, he went solo with the album AuClairDeLaTerre , but continued to work with many other artists. He took part in Karine Clercq's album La Vie Buissonnière in 2008, and was behind the drums on Axelle Red's acoustic tour of Europe and the Middle East in 2011. In 2014, Dominique A called on him again for his album Éléor, and Sacha Toorop accompanied him on tour before devoting himself to recording his second album under his own name, Les Tourments du Ciel, released in 2017.
