Ivan Miguel Conti Maranhão (August 16, 1946), also known as “Mamão,” is a Brazilian drummer and percussionist, mostly known for being one third of the jazz-funk outfit Azymuth. Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Ivan Conti has recorded with some of the most popular artists in MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), including Milton Nascimento, Eumir Deodato, Marcos Valle, Hyldon, Gal Costa, and Jorge Ben. With Azymuth, he released a string of classic jazz fusion albums such as Azimüth (1975), Som Ambiente (1972), and Outubro (1980). His solo debut, The Human Factor arrived in 1984 and was followed by Batida Diferente (1992), and Pulsar (1997). In 2008, Ivan Conti collaborated with American hip-hop producer Otis “Madlib” Jackson on Sujinho, a shared exploration of Latin jazz and samba released via Mochilla in the US and Kindred Spirits in the Netherlands. After signing with Far Out Recordings, Ivan Conti dropped Poison Fruit in 2019, an eclectic album that mixed jazz-funk, samba, and deep house and featured remixes by Tenderlonious, Glenn Astro, and Max Graef.
