Vjekoslav Šutej was born on July 31, 1951, and was a Croatian orchestral conductor. He studied conducting under Igor Gjadrov at the Zagreb Music Academy before obtaining his Master of Music degree in Rome with Franco Ferrara. From 1979 to 1989, Šutej served as art director and chief conductor at the Croatian National Theatre in Split. He conducted opera productions such as Eugene Onegin and Rigoletto during his tenure as music director of La Fenice opera house in Venice from 1990 to 1993. Šutej was also a founding member of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, acting as their art director and principal conductor from 1990 to 1996. He conducted at various prestigious venues, including the Vienna State Opera, where he opened the 2001–02 season with Don Carlos. Šutej passed away on December 2, 2009, at the age of 58, after a battle with leukemia.
