Joseph Charles Hickerson, born in Lake Forest, Illinois, was an American folk singer and musicologist. He graduated from Oberlin College with a B.S. in physics in 1957. He released his debut album We've Got Some Singing To Do (1958) with The Folksmiths. He participated in the first LP recording of "Kumbayah" in 1958. In 1960, he collaborated with Pete Seeger, adding two verses to "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", and co-created the Kingston Trio's version of "Bonny Hielan' Laddie" alongside Dave Guard. In 1963, Hickerson became the Librarian and Director of the Archive of Folk Song at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, a position he held for 35 years until 1998. He released the notable albums Joe Hickerson With a Gathering of Friends (1970) and Drive Dull Care Away Volumes 1 & 2 (1976).
