Piero Gamba, also known as Pierino Gamba, was born on September 16, 1936, in Rome, Italy, and was a conductor, pianist, and former child prodigy. He began his musical career early, conducting the orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia at the age of eight, and later appeared with major orchestras, including in London in 1948. In 1962, he received the Arnold Bax Memorial Medal. He was particularly noted for his ability to conduct accompaniments and for performing as a concerto soloist from the keyboard. Gamba served as music director and conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra from 1970 to 1981, and later as principal conductor of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 1982 to 1987. He also led the SODRE National Symphony Orchestra of Uruguay during two periods, from 1994 to 1995 and from 2001 to 2004. He died on January 30, 2022.
