Cashless Society, a southern African hip hop group from Gaborone, Botswana and Johannesburg, South Africa, formed in 1999. The group initially consisted of Snazz D (Julian Du Plessis), Draztik (Dave Balsher), X-Amount (Kwezi Ngcakani), Black Intellect (Jerry Kai Lewis), Fat Free (Salim Mosidinyane) & DJ IQ, who later left the group. The name Cashless Society reflected both the modern economic landscape and Africa's economic challenges. In 2003, they released their debut album African Raw Material, Volume 1 under Unreleased Records with distribution by Sony BMG Africa. Notable tracks include "Hottentot Hop (Bantu 1, 2)", which won a South African Music Award for Best Video in 2003, and "Taxi Wars", which addressed taxi commission conflicts in Johannesburg. The group also won three SAMA awards and four Hip-Hop Indaba awards that year.
