Elizabeth Harwood, born May 27, 1938, in Barton Seagrave, England, was a lyric soprano. She studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and won the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship at the age of 21 to study in Milan. Harwood made her professional debut as Second Boy in The Magic Flute at Glyndebourne in 1960. She performed with Sadler's Wells Opera Company from 1961 to 1965, taking on roles such as Gilda in Rigoletto and Phyllis in Iolanthe. In 1967, she made her Covent Garden debut as the Fiakermilli. Harwood's international reputation grew in the 1970s, with performances at the Salzburg Festival, La Scala, Milan, and the Metropolitan Opera. She became particularly noted for her roles in operas by Mozart and Richard Strauss. Her notable albums include Christus Am Ölberge Op. 85 (1970) and Puccini: La Bohème - Highlights (1974). She died of cancer on June 21, 1990, at the age of 52.
