Dolores de la Colina Flores, known as Lolita de la Colina, was born on December 26, 1940, in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She began her career at 14 when she wrote "Qué manera de querer", recorded by Olga Guillot and winning a gold disc in Latin America. In 1960, Lolita de la Colina signed with Musart Records as an exclusive lyricist and translator for artists such as Gloria Lasso and Angélica María. Her adaptations included "Amar y ser amada" and "Yo que no vivo sin ti", both hits for Angélica María. In 1967, she released her debut album under Musart, featuring 12 original songs. A dispute over the lyrics of "La mujer que te ama" led to her departure from Mexico in 1969. She then moved to Puerto Rico, where she continued writing and performing. She returned to Mexico in 1974.
