Kensington Market, also known as The Market, was a Toronto-based rock band active from 1967 to 1969. Formed by Keith McKie, Gene Martynec, Alex Darou, Jimmy Watson and Luke Gibson, the group was named after a downtown Toronto neighborhood. The band's early singles included "Bobby's Birthday" and "I Would Be The One," released in 1967 on Stone Records. Their debut album, Avenue Road, was released by Warner Bros. in 1968 and reached number 39 on the RPM charts. The album featured the single "I Would Be The One", which peaked at number 59 on the national RPM chart. In 1969, they released their second album, Aardvark, with keyboardist John Mills-Cockell. Despite critical acclaim, the band disbanded in spring 1969 due to creative differences and personal issues. Alex Darou passed away in the early 1970s.
