Pietro De Maria, born in 1967 in Venice, Italy, is an Italian pianist who began studying piano with Giorgio Vianello and Gino Gorini. He won the First Prize at the International Piano Competition Alfred Cortot in Milan at age 13. De Maria continued his studies with Maria Tipo at the Conservatory of Geneva. In 1990, he received the Critics' Award at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and subsequently won the Dino Ciani (1990) and Géza Anda (1994) competitions. He was awarded the Mendelssohn Prize in Hamburg in 1997. De Maria has performed extensively with major orchestras worldwide, collaborating with conductors such as Roberto Abbado, Gary Bertini, and Myung-Whun Chung. His discography includes notable releases like Chopin: Ballades (2007) and Chopin: The Three Sonatas (2008). De Maria is the first Italian pianist to publicly perform the complete piano works of Fryderyk Chopin in six concerts.
