Battlefield Band was a Scottish traditional music group formed in Glasgow in 1969 by five student friends from Strathclyde University: Brian McNeill, Jim Thomson, Alan Reid, Eddie Morgan and Sandra Lang. Their name originated from the area in south Glasgow where McNeill resided at the time. After several lineup changes and an album recorded for a minor Breton label titled Scottish Folk (1976), they signed to Topic Records and released a self-titled debut album, Battlefield Band (1977). Notable albums include At the Front (1978), Stand Easy (1979), and Home Is Where the Van Is (1980). They were known for incorporating bagpipes with non-traditional instruments like electronic keyboards and blending traditional songs with original compositions. They toured extensively, performing in Europe, Australia, Asia, the Middle East, and North America. Significant achievements included winning "Best Live Act" at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2003 and being inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2016 for "Services to Performance." A final album, Beg & Borrow (2015), was released shortly after. Their last known live performance occurred during the Scotland Piping Live! festival in 2017, after which they went dormant.
