Sara Hickman is an American singer-songwriter and artist born on March 1, 1963, in Jacksonville. She attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and graduated from North Texas State University in 1986. Hickman relocated to Dallas in 1987 and released the studio recording Equal Scary People in 1988. She signed with Elektra Records and released Shortstop in 1990. Following her departure from the label in 1993, she purchased the rights to her recordings and released Necessary Angels in 1994. Her recording "I Couldn't Help Myself" reached number 3 on the adult contemporary chart. Hickman released more than 15 albums, including Spiritual Appliances (2000) and Motherlode (2006). The Texas State Commission on the Arts appointed her the Official Texas State Musician for 2010.
