LE CONCERT SPIRITUEL
Choir and orchestra
ounded by Hervé Niquet in 1987 with the aim of breathing new life into the great works of the French repertoire performed at the court of Versailles, Le Concert Spirituel has soon become one of the leading French early-music ensembles on period-instruments.
Le Concert Spirituel specializes in performance of French and European sacred music, while devoting itself in parallel to the discovery of an unjustly forgotten operatic patrimony and has won many awards (German Record Critic’s Award, “Grand Prix” Académie Charles Cros, Echo Klassik Award, Edison Award).
Since 2015 it has recorded exclusively for Alpha Classics : Vivaldi’s Gloria, Cherubini and Plantade’s Requiem, Lully’s Persée (1770), Haendel’s Messiah and Coronation Anthems, Marais’ Ariane et Bacchus, Charpentier’s Médée, Desmarest and Campra’s Iphigénie en Tauride, Fauré’s Requiem. The next release takes place in October 2025 with Haendel’s Israel in Egypt.
The ensemble tours in the most prestigious international concert halls (London Barbican Centre, Royal Albert Hall / BBC Proms and Wigmore Hall, the Tokyo Opera, Shanghai Concert Hall, Forbidden City Hall Beijing….), and in Paris each year at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Palace of Versailles.
In 2025/26, the ensemble celebrates the 300th anniversary of the original Concert Spirituel, with the a new production of Striggio's exceptional 40-parts Mass, on tour in Germany (after Regensburg, Bremen), Italy (in Rome’s St John Lateran Basilica), the UK (at the Royal Albert Hall, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 for the BBC Proms), France (Radio France Montpellier, Saintes Festival, Compiègne, Neuilly-sur-Seine etc).
The Parisian season starts with a concert version of Purcell’s King Arthur at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées - and Bordeaux Opera House- and the recreation of rare choral works by Charpentier, recorded for Château de Versailles Spectacles at Versailles’ Royal Chapel at the start of 2026. Vivaldi’s Vespers follow, on tour in France (Soissons, Metz), the Netherlands (Groningen, Eindhoven, Utrecht, Den Haag), Belgium (Ghent’s Bijloke), as well as a revival of Rameau’s Platée, in the acclaimed production staged by Corinne and Gilles Benizio at Versailles’ Royal Opera, and a theatrical performance of the Symphonies for the King’s Supper by Delalande with comedian Jean-Philippe Desrousseaux on tour in France.
Le Concert Spirituel is subsidised by the Ministry of Culture (DRAC Ile-de-France) and the City of Paris.
