The Thing, a Norwegian-Swedish jazz trio, was formed in February 2000 in Sweden. The group consists of Mats Gustafsson on saxophones, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on double bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums. They took their name from a track on Don Cherry's 1966 album Where Is Brooklyn?. Their initial recordings included compositions by Don Cherry, released in Sweden by Crazy Wisdom/Universal. The Thing's repertoire expanded to include works by various artists such as James Blood Ulmer and PJ Harvey. Notable albums include She Knows... (2001), featuring Joe McPhee; Garage (2004); and Action Jazz (2006). They are known for their unique stage uniforms, consisting of t-shirts from Ruby's Barbecue Restaurant in Austin, Texas. In 2012, The Thing collaborated with Neneh Cherry on the album The Cherry Thing, which marked Cherry's first album as a named leader in 16 years. Other notable collaborations include work with Ken Vandermark and Thurston Moore.
