Zevulun Kwartin, known professionally as Zavel Kwartin, was born on March 25, 1874, in Novoarkhanhelsk, Kherson Governorate, Russian Empire (now Ukraine). He began his career as a singer and chazzan (cantor) with his first concert in 1896 at the synagogue of his hometown. In 1897, Kwartin moved to Vienna for further studies. In 1903, he was appointed chazzan at the newly opened Neudeggergasse Synagogue in Vienna’s district Josefstadt. He signed his first contracts with record labels like Deutsche Grammophon in 1906 and gave concerts in various cities including Vilna and Białystok. In 1926, he relocated to Mandatory Palestine where he resided until 1937. Kwartin's career highlights include a concert with his daughter Anna Kwartin at the Metropolitan Opera House on April 27, 1920. Kwartin passed away in 1952, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
