MC Conrad, born Conrad Thompson in Northampton, England, was a pioneering figure in the drum and bass and jungle scenes, known for his distinctive fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and soul-infused lyricism. Starting out in the UK hip-hop and breakdancing scenes of the 1980s, he transitioned to the emerging rave culture of the early 1990s, eventually partnering with LTJ Bukem to co-found Good Looking Records in 1991. His smooth, rhythmic vocal style became a defining element of atmospheric drum and bass, most notably on the Progression Sessions series, where his live performances elevated the genreās sonic landscape. Tracks such as "Vocalist 01" showcased his ability to blend melodic narration with intricate breakbeats, cementing his reputation as one of the most influential MCs in electronic music. In 2020, he launched his own label, Resonance, continuing to push creative boundaries. Later in life, he became deeply involved in the Birmingham music community, reconnecting with his roots and mentoring young artists. MC Conrad passed away on April 30, 2024, at age 52, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the voice of drum and bass. In June 2024, the MC Conrad Foundation was established to support emerging artists in the electronic music industry.
