The Slants, a rock band composed entirely of Asian Americans, were formed in Portland, Oregon, by Simon Tam in 2006. Their debut album Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts was released in 2007. The band's name sparked a legal battle that culminated in the Supreme Court case Matal v. Tam in 2017, where the court ruled unanimously in favor of the band. Throughout their career, The Slants performed across four continents and released five studio albums, including The Band Plays On in 2023. They were deeply involved with the Asian American community and racial justice work, launching a nonprofit organization, The Slants Foundation, in 2018 to support artist-activists addressing racial inequities. In late 2019, the band took an indefinite hiatus from live touring but continued composing music for charitable causes.
