Pertti "Pepa" Päivinen, born on June 2, 1955 in Finland, is a jazz musician and saxophonist. He began playing flute at age 12 and later studied at the Oulunkylä Pop & Jazz Institute. Päivinen's early career included performances with Sami Hurmerinta and Tapani Kansa. In 1979, he joined Jukka Tolonen’s band for European tours. In 1984, Edward Vesala brought him to his group Sound & Fury, and in 1985, he became a member of the UMO Jazz Orchestra. Päivinen collaborated with Anthony Braxton's Braxtonia in 1988 and formed his own trio in 1998, which later expanded into a quartet. Notable albums include Saxigon (1997), North Pipe (2009), and Felix Culpa (2018). He received the Pekka Pöyry Award in 1984, an Emma Award for his album Umpsukkelis in 1999, and Musicians' Union Recognition Award in 2003.
